Hard to believe that it was sunny and in the mid-70’s yesterday now that the cold front pushed through and kicked up some big time winds with quickly falling temps that will bottom out about the time we hit the road tomorrow morning.
We have the gear needed to remain warm for the cold start, but it’s still not the “vision” we had of our 450-mile spring fling ride down to enjoy fun in the sun at Daytona Beach. Instead of having the sun warming our faces we’ll be bundled up like a couple of snow mobile riders; from bottom to top:
- Heated insoles in our boots; check.
- Heated overpants; check.
- Overpants to wear over our overpants; check.
- Heated jacket liners; check.
- Insulated jackets to wear over our heated jacket liners; check.
- Heated gloves / glove liners; check.
- Inner gloves or outer shells; check.
- Neck/face gators; check.
- Shoei Full-Face Helmets; check.
We’re hoping that as we roll through the Macon area we’ll be able to shut off the heat. By the time we get to Waycross we should be able to shed the liners all together and switch over to our less cumbersome helmets, as the sun should be shining with temps creeping up into the 50’s and 60’s for the last 1/3 of our ride to Daytona Beach.
Yes, that means the new WiFi remote appears to be working and able to operate both cameras reliably so we should be able to get some pretty good video during the 3-4 hour life of the WiFi backpack internal batteries. As for the remote, I decided to use a GoPro adhesive mount on the underside of the Harley-Davidson “wind splitter” vent assembly so that I won’t have to mess around with a lanyard or wrist-strap: that should be huge! You can see it just under the “mail slot” in the tinted windscreen. And, you’ll also notice where the 2nd GoPro camera has been mounted for shot sequence #1. It will probably get moved during our first stop of the day. However, it’s been nice getting things all sorted out with the cameras. Pretty neat stuff.
As for the weather at our destination, Thursday through Saturday afternoon in Daytona Beach look OK. However, Sunday’s looking a bit on the iffy side as rain moves in across the southeast on Saturday night and stays with us all the way through our trip home to Atlanta on Sunday.
So, yes…. it looks like our rain gear will also get a bit of a work-out for this trip. Guess we can’t even buy a break on the weather!
